With the end of summer just around the corner, it is the ideal moment to get your garden and terrace furniture ready for the quieter season. At Jardín de Nerja, as outdoor furniture specialists, we want to help you protect your investment and make sure your sun loungers, sofas and barbecues stay like new year after year.
Here is our professional advice on looking after and preserving your furniture once summer is over:
✅ 1. A general clean before storing or covering
Never put furniture away dirty or damp.
Aluminium or resin frames: clean them with warm water, a mild soap and a soft cloth. Do not use abrasive products.
Fabrics and cushions: if the covers come off, wash them following the manufacturer's instructions. If they do not, clean them with a soft brush, water and a mild soap. Let them dry completely in the sun before storing them.
Wood: use products made specifically for outdoor wood, and oil it if necessary. Cleaning and feeding the wood are the keys to stopping it cracking.
✅ 2. Check the condition of the furniture
Take the chance to spot any small problems.
Check for loose screws, worn joints or small breakages that you can repair now, before they get worse.
See whether any fabric has lost its colour or its water resistance: you could replace it during the autumn or winter, without rushing.
✅ 3. Protection from sun and damp
In Nerja we still get sunny days… but more damp as well.
Use breathable protective covers: they keep dust and damp from building up while letting the materials breathe.
Do not use plastics that are not designed for outdoor furniture, as they can trap moisture and cause mould or a musty smell.
✅ 4. Storing things properly
If you can put some of the furniture away, so much the better.
Cushions and textiles: store them somewhere dry and well ventilated (outdoor or indoor storage boxes).
Folding or modular furniture: if you have the room, store it in a storeroom, cellar or garage.
Barbecues: give them a thorough clean and cover them with their original cover. Avoid leaving them out in the rain.
✅ 5. Keep enjoying it whenever the weather allows
On the Costa del Sol, the good weather does not end in August.
